Spioenkop Reserve is situated 35 km from Ladysmith and 14 km from Winterton. The reserve was established in July 1975 and is 6 000 ha in extent.

An entrance fee is payable at the entrance gate. Reception office hours are from 08:00 – 12:30 and 14:00 – 16:30 on weekdays and 08:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 16:00 on weekends and public holidays. Visitors can enjoy game viewing and there are self-guided trails available. with a variety of game and bird (270) species occurring in the reserve. Horse rides through the game area are available daily at 08:00 and 14:00, minimum age 12 years. Angling is permitted.

Spioenkop Dam is ideally suited to boating and a registered boat club operates at the dam, but boaters need not be a club member. Boats must be registered with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Please note that there are no boats for hire. Life jackets must be carried on board and be worn at all times. Copies of the boating regulations are available on request. Visitors intending to participate in boating must provide life jackets, which must be worn at all times, and skippers must be in possession of a valid skippers licence.

From Van Reenen, turn off the N3 toll road at the Bergville off-ramp (R616). Turn left towards Ladysmith and follow this route for 5 km. Turn right onto the R600 signposted Spioenkop/Winterton. The reserve is 25 km from the turn-off.
